Tour of Australian Public Toilets continues

Oh, I mean vanlife.

Funny how goal oriented we are. People love having a destination, something to work towards and then moving on a path to get there. Ten weeks ago I set out on my east coast of Australia journey with the final destination of Cairns in mind. And I made it! I’ve been here a week already. Does that mean that my trip is over? Did I move too fast? What happens now?

With lockdowns extending in Victoria and the shit continuing to hit the fan in New South Wales, I don’t see myself going back in that direction. I’m actually not in much of a rush to leave Queensland at all. It’s warm and beachy and friendly here so what’s the rush. Though, I’ve found I’m not that good at keeping still. I’ve become accustomed to moving around and seeing new exciting things everyday. There’s plenty to see around here but the weathers been pretty average the past few days. That means lots of time in the van and the shopping centre. It also means lots of public toilets. Some better than other but I have to say I’m disappointed in the lack of hand soap around these parts.

On a positive note, Cairns is a pretty great town and has proven to be very van friendly with lots of places to park up during the day (and many options for stealth camping at night). Just hit up the public toilet before bed and park near a hotel or holiday apartments.

It’s been a nice change to be in one spot but I’m getting antsy. I want to keep moving, see new things, keep exploring. But where to next when I’ve made it to my destination?! I suppose I’ll keep heading north and then maybe over to the Northern Territory. Perhaps I just decide on a new destination and head there to quell the desire for direction and a goal to work towards. Would moving around without a destination feel as productive or enriching? Maybe it would be even more freeing. There’s only one way to find out.
